Insegnamento di APPRENDIMENTO E RITMI DELLA MENTE E LABORATORIO
Corso di laurea magistrale in PSICOLOGIA APPLICATA
SSD: M-PSI/01
CFU: 10,00

Contents | The course is aimed at studying the functioning of mental processes according to environmental rhythms (light-dark, seasons) and physiological/behavioral states (sleep-wake, circadian-regulated biological functions). In particular, we intend to deepen the relationship between memory/learning processes and biological rhythms, with specific reference: a) to sleep-dependent memory consolidation; b) to the reprocessing / re-elaboration (reshaping) in sleep of the material acquired during wake; c) the relations between sleep pattern and waketime cognitive activity.
|
Textbook and course materials | "Psychology of Sleep" (Edited by G. Ficca and M. Fabbri), Maggioli Pbs. chapters 1, 2 (except pages 60-66), 3, 7, 8, 10, 11 (except pages 296-297 and 307-311), 13, 14, 17. |
Course objectives | Furthermore, the student is expected to get familiar with the main laboratory techniques concerning the subject and to have a clear understanding of the main applicative fall-out - both clinical and experimental - of its major topics. |
Prerequisites | Consistent knowledge of the fundamental principles of the basic subjects in the 3-yrs Degree course in Psychology, namely General Psychology, Psychometrics and Research Methodology, Psychobiology. |
Teaching methods | Frontal lessons, tot. 42 hours (fourteen 3-hrs lessons; 6 credits) + Interactive-practical Laboratory, tot. 32 hours (10 3-hrs meetings + 1 2-hs meeting). During the frontal lessons, power point slides will be shown and illustrated, occasionally adding video material. Monthly recaps, verification tests and "question times" will also be held.
Laboratory will be based on: mutual discussion of scientific literature, illustration of experimental methods and techniques, practical training on research designs and research problems. |
Evaluation methods | The exam is oral. The commission is made up of 3 or 4 professors and the exam is divided into two parts, the first to be taken with one of the professors in the Commission, the second, mandatory, with its President.
In order to pass the exam, as underlined at the "objectives" section, the student is also supposed to be familiar with practical aspects and therefore the participation in practical laboratories - to the extent of at least 75% of its total duration (i.e., 24 hours out of 32) - is strongly encouraged and is considered a fundamental requirement, without which the achievement of these objectives would predictably be more complicated.
Mid-term test: A mid-term test is scheduled, for both attending and non attending students, on 3/4 of the planned program, in dates that will be defined by the Course coordinator and communicated to the students at the beginning of the course. The mid-term test focuses on what has been so far illustrated in class. The test consists of a written task with four open questions, to be answered in a maximum time of 60 minutes, each relating to the four major topics of the program, i.e.: a) phenomenology of sleep and biological rhythms; b) the role of sleep for memory and learning; c) relationships between learning and dream processes;d) importance of biological rhythms for waking performance. Maximum score for the exam is 30: above the sufficiency score (18/30), the student can decide, at the oral exam: a) to keep the grade obtained in the intermediate test and to take the oral exam only on the remaining topics of the program: if so, the score of the test will average with that of the oral exam for the definition of the final grade; b) to refuse the score of the intermediate test, thus doing the oral exam on all the topics in the program. Obviously, this second way will be mandatory for all students who were not sufficient at the intermediate test. The test is valid only for the year 2022-23, i.e. until March 2024 exam session. |
